Bioenergy Day 2017 - Save the Date for October 18

Wednesday, October 18, marks the day for the Fifth Annual Bioenergy Day. With more than four months to go, there's plenty of time to decide how your organization will recognize the day, sharing with audiences old and new the many benefits of bioenergy.

This year, we are highlighting the economic benefits of bioenergy. The presence of bioenergy in a community creates jobs, enhances revenue and forest products markets, and reduces waste. Our video on bioenergy, forest products and forestry in Northwestern Montana will illustrate how manufacturers convert leftover fuels into energy.

There are many ways to contribute to Bioenergy Day 2017. We've uploaded our Participation Guide on the site to help you brainstorm the ways to mark Bioenergy Day, with some best practices and sample materials. You can also look around our website, www.bioenergyday.org, to see how other groups have approached Bioenergy Day.

Contact Carrie Annand with any questions on Bioenergy Day 2017 or to register your organization's event.

Governor Tours Importance of State’s Forest Products
Mississippi State University News

Forest products are part of the DNA of Mississippi.

That is how Gov. Phil Bryant welcomed participants Monday [June 26] to the 71st International Convention of the Forest Products Society, hosted by Mississippi State University’s College of Forest Resources and Forest and Wildlife Research Center.

Bryant, whose grandfather once harvested timber by mule in south Mississippi, made the connection that all Mississippians have been involved in or have a family member involved in the forest products industry.

“Our forest products industry is as strong as ever because now we bring our forest products to the world,” Bryant said.

Hutterite Colonies Leading the Masses in Biomass Heating
Manitoba Co-Operator

Manitoba’s Hutterite colonies are leading a made-in-Manitoba farm heating movement.

“With the provincial ban on the use of coal for space heating in Manitoba, a good number of Manitoba’s Hutterite colonies have recently upgraded or converted their heating systems from aging coal-burning systems to cleaner biomass boiler heating systems,” says Richard Grosshans, bioeconomy lead for International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)’s water program.

According to Grosshans, some of these biomass systems require processed biomass, such as commercially available fuel pellets. These fuel pellets are stored in a silo and are slowly fed into the building’s boiler system as needed.
