Paris and Pellets: Riding the Winds of Change

A few weeks ago in Paris, a potentially historical climate agreement was signed and sent a strong message about the important changes that are to come to the worldwide energy sector. The 195 participating nations showed their commitment to reducing greenhouse gases in order to limit the rise in global temperatures. An ambitious transition toward renewable energy sources has been announced with the goal of weaning our societies off fossil fuels by the end of the century.

White paper highlights critical areas in pellet making process

On Jan. 12, FutureMetrics LLC released a white paper author and senior consultant John Swaan said could be called wood pellet making 101." The paper highlights several critical areas in the process of making wood pellets. Although the process appears simple and straightforward, Swaan said the reality is far more complex.
Swaan stated in the paper, the apparent simplicity of the process has caused many project developers to fail to incorporate the knowledge, skills and, most importantly, the wisdom gained from experience into the plant designs and operations protocols.

Washington State University Extension Q&A: Should I use wood ash in my garden?

Q. I heat my house with a wood pellet stove. With the cold weather lately, I have a large amount of wood ash. I read that it is good to put wood ash on your garden and work it into the soil. Is this true?
A. Wood ash, especially hardwood ash, is high in potassium and provides a source of this nutrient. However, wood ash is also alkaline and will increase the alkalinity of the soil. The addition of wood ash to garden soil is helpful only if the soil is acid, significantly less than 7.0 and lacking in potassium. However, you typically only find very acid soils in the parts of Washington that receive more than 20 inches of rain a year.

The state's rapidly shrinking paper industry is putting the squeeze on local landowners who have supplied Maines mills with low-quality pulp for decades. When the Verso Corp. closed its Bucksport mill in 2014, it resulted in one less customer for Maine foresters.
As a 22-year licensed forester, Erik Carlson of Edgecomb is well aware of the state's paper mills struggles over the past generation. One of his largest customers is the Verso mill in Jay. The Androscoggin Mill purchases pulp wood from Carlson and his clients.
