Statement by the Pellet Fuels Institute in Response to EPA’s Release of its Biogenic Carbon Framework

November 19, 2014

ARLINGTON, VA Today the Pellet Fuels Institute’s Executive Director Jennifer Hedrick issued a statement in response to the release of EPA’s accounting framework for biogenic carbon emissions.

”PFI applauds EPA for moving the process forward toward completing a final carbon accounting framework for bioenergy. Regulatory certainty regarding the manner in which emissions from biomass fuels are treated is critical. To that end, we are pleased with Acting Assistant Administrator McCabe’s statement that biomass residuals, like sawdust, will be considered carbon neutral. This is a positive step for all in the wood-to-energy sector, in all its forms.

“Pellet fuel used to heat homes and businesses across the country is derived primarily from sawmill residuals—material that would otherwise be destined for landfills. Our members convert that material into affordable, locally produced and carbon neutral fuel consumed by high efficient pellet stoves and whole home pellet heating systems. It’s a win for consumers, jobs and the environment. This triple value proposition is the reason PFI has been promoting increased deployment of biomass heating systems in both the residential and commercial sectors.

“We are now evaluating the larger framework document that was released today. Upon initial review, it seems to take a fairly complicated approach to determining the carbon emissions profile of various biomass feedstocks. We are now conducting an in-depth analysis and look forward to participating in the public comment process.”

The Pellet Fuels Institute (PFI) is a North American trade association based in Arlington, Virginia, that represents a range of contributors to the pellet industry, including companies that manufacture wood pellets and pellet manufacturing equipment, or provide other products and services to the densified biomass industry at large.
