Know a Young Biomass Researcher? Nominations Due Oct. 9 for Young Researchers Conference in Linz, Austria Held February 2016

The Young Researchers Conference will be held on February 24-25, 2016, in coordination with the World Sustainable Energy Days 2016 in Wels/Austria. With more than 750 participants from over 50 countries each year, the World Sustainable Energy Days are one of Europe's largest annual conferences on sustainable energy. Please visit the World Sustainable Energy Days website to learn more about the program, as well as view this year’s video and see images of past events.

We invite young researchers (born after 1980) to submit contributions by October 9, 2015, at www.wsed.at/call. Submissions are welcome from all scientific fields. A high-level scientific committee selects papers for oral and poster presentation. The organizer covers the costs of accommodation, meals, participation and local transport for up to 60 selected participants.

The best contributions will be honored with the awards "Best Young Researcher: Biomass" and the "Best Young Researcher: Energy Efficiency." The researchers will each receive 1,000 Euro as prize money.

PFI to Hold Fall Fly-In in Washington, DC

The PFI Government Affairs Committee is making plans to hold a series of meetings on Capitol Hill with Members of Congress and federal agency officials to discuss a range of issues impacting the densified biomass industry. 

You are invited to join us for this excellent opportunity to meet with your representatives in Congress to educate them about your businesses, including issues affecting your business and employees directly. It’s also a time to rally support amongst government leaders, and network with others in the industry. 

A date and agenda are being finalized, and we’ll provide further information in the next few weeks. A mid-November timeframe is anticipated.

In the interim, we hope you’ll consider making a trip to Washington to join your colleagues in a lobbying effort on Capitol Hill. No prior experience is necessary, and PFI will provide the tools and training to prepare you for the meetings.

Lignetics Expands its Footprint with the Acquisition of Wood Pellet Manufacturing Plant in Strong, Maine

Sandpoint, Idaho – Today, Lignetics, Inc. (“Lignetics”) announced the acquisition of the assets of GF Funding LLC (whose facility was formerly known as Geneva Wood Fuels), expanding its footprint into Maine and upper New England. Lignetics is the largest residential wood pellet manufacturing company in the U.S., which now has a production capacity of approximately 550,000 tons of wood pellets per year.  The company is the only pellet manufacturing company that has wood pellet manufacturing plants on both the East Coast and the West Coast in six plant locations in the states of Maine, Oregon, Idaho, West Virginia and Virginia.  

Ken Tucker, CEO of Lignetics stated, "Completing this acquisition is in line with our strategy to continue to expand our geographic footprint in the U.S. and remain the market leader in the residential wood pellet industry.”

What's that? A wood pellet boiler

The nonprofit Northern Forest Center, which works in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and parts of New York, has a neat idea: You eat local food. Why not heat with local wood? Not to mention, sever your relationship with fossil fuels. The organization is promoting the use of wood pellet boilers. Don’t confuse this newer technology with either wood stoves or wood pellet stoves.

Experts: Winter's wood pellet supply looks strong

The demand for wood pellets is strong in Vermont, and so far manufacturers and suppliers are keeping pace with the constant demand. 
“We’re selling it as fast as we’re making it,” said Chris Brooks, CEO of Vermont Wood Pellet in Clarendon.
That’s in spite of the recent decline in oil prices. “We sign contracts in March for the year, and we’ve been sold out every year for the last four years,” Brooks said.

Three former Coast Guard biomass boilers on way to Alaska

Three biomass boilers are being shipped to Haines, Alaska, with the potential to heat a variety of buildings throughout town. The boilers are expected to arrive next month and utilize either wood pellets or locally produced wood chips as a feedstock. Upon arrival in Haines, the boilers manufactured by Unilux will remain in storage for the next year or so. Twelve to 24 months later they are expected to be up and running, displacing around 80,000 gallons of heating oil.
