Update from PFI Executive Director

The PFI Board of Directors held its fall meeting in Chicago on October 28. There are a number of important updates to share with you as a result of that meeting.

PFI Membership
Amongst a number of items under consideration, the Board approved the 2016 membership dues rates, which can be found on the PFI website. Current PFI members may renew your membership  now by visiting our online renewal page or you may contact the PFI office and process your renewal via email ([email protected]) or phone (206-209-5277). Your 2015 membership expires on December 31, so be sure to renew soon so you can continue to take advantage of the benefits of PFI membership

For those of you who aren’t members of PFI, we encourage you to commit to joining the association in 2016. There are a number of opportunities for you to be involved in PFI’s initiatives in the year ahead and to benefit directly from PFI’s advocacy of policy makers and end users on your behalf. When we are united as an industry, we will have more success seeing the regulatory and legislative outcomes that will benefit all of us. Read more about how membership in PFI benefits your business.

Government Affairs
Government affairs initiatives remain a strong priority of the association, and 2016 will be no exception. The PFI Board approved the government affairs priorities recommended by the Government Affairs Committee. The priorities are part of a focused agenda established by the Committee toward an ultimate goal of achieving parity with other renewables in the federal policy and regulatory arena. PFI Annual Conference Agenda
I encourage you to be on the lookout for an upcoming announcement from the PFI Annual Conference Committee. The 2016 annual conference program is being drafted and we’re seeking your input for speakers and program content. Topics will include a global market overview, new market opportunities, strengthening pellet operations, standards compliance, and more. Contact PFI staff if you’re interested in speaking or would like to recommend a speaker for one of these topic areas. Register for Breakfast & Biomass: A Briefing on the Pellet Market - March 18, 2016 in New Orleans

 

It’s not too early to start thinking about the 2016 HPBExpo! PFI is pleased to announce next year’s Breakfast & Biomass, our annual event at the expo to address the latest trends and issues of importance to pellet fuels manufacturers, retailers and suppliers.

Breakfast & Biomass will take place on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 7:30am in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The event will include industry reports, networking opportunities and a full breakfast. The PFI Conference Committee is at work on the program and an agenda will be circulated soon.

Pellet stoves get money saving makeover
WMTW - Portland, ME
A new generation of pellet heat is making it easier and more affordable for Mainers to heat their homes.

"Every morning when I went to milk, I filled the wood burner, and when he went down at 9 o'clock at night for night chores, I'd go out and fill it again," Theresa Hardy, of Hardy Farm, said.

That was the daily routine for Hardy to heat her home until she switched to a wood-pellet boiler.

Alaska warms up to biomass heat

The plan to heat more of Haines with biomass fuel is moving forward, though a date for implementation is months, or more, away. The three refurbished Coast Guard boilers are now in Haines. But there are still a lot of details to figure out before the systems are up and running. An advisory group met earlier this week to discuss the potential benefits of increasing the biomass presence in Haines.

Weyerhaeuser buys Plum Creek in $8.4B timber deal
USA Today
Weyerhaeuser (WY) is buying Plum Creek Timber(PCL) for $8.44 billion to form what is expected to be one of the world’s biggest timberland and forest products companies.

The company will keep the Weyerhaeuser name and have more than 13 million acres of timberland, the companies said Sunday. It will be worth $23 billion based on current share prices.

How a Raleigh drone developer could forever change biomass farming

From far away, it likely looks like a field of grass. But researchers at Tennessee-based Genera Energy see it as biomass – fuel, that, once distilled, can power a variety of applications.

And, thanks to a Raleigh technology company with eyes in the sky, they think they can maximize their yields. Genera has teamed up with Raleigh-based PrecisionHawk to develop new ways to analyze the crop.

Emerging markets, Power Panel and dust safety highlight WPAC 2015
Canadian Biomass
November 6, 2015 - Markets, growth in the north, the ever-popular Power Panel and dust management were just a few of the highlights at the Wood Pellet Association of Canada’s annual conference, which took place from Nov. 3 to 5 in Halifax.

Approximately 200 people filled the Cunard Centre to check out the WPAC 2015 conference, which featured a variety of speaker panels, keynote speakers, a day of tours and an industry trade show.
